Jamal and his family are the proud owners of hanam's, Edinburgh's first and only truly authentic Kurdish & Middle East restaurant.
Food is very important to Kurdish people, it's not just about eating when you're hungry, but much more about the social aspect of dining together in large extended families and amongst friends.
It's precisely this kind of atmosphere that Jamal desires to bring to hanam's, and to share with everyone some of the very special parts of Kurdish culture that all Kurds carry in their hearts, no matter where they are in the world!
Jamal and his Kurdish staff hope that you will enjoy the hanam's experience, a little insight to life in another culture!
Remember that there's nothing Kurds like better than to show off their dancing skills, infact, they say it's in their blood (you should his baby son boogy on down even before he's walking!!!) and Jamal is no exception, so if you want another fun "insight" into Kurdish culture, make sure Jamal has his traditional costume on, a cloth to wave, a bit of music and encouragement... and off he goes!!! Feel free to join in!!!!

Bite Magazine - Interview with Jamal - August 2006

" Hanam's has quickly developed an incredibly loyal following. This is due in large part to the attention to detail of owner Jamal Ahmed, a Kurd who left his home in northern Iraq as a teenager to go to London. Working for a relative, he was dispatched to Edinburgh for a meeting, and says he knew "within five minutes" that this is where he would settle. "The air is clean and fresh, and the landscape just reminded me of my home town so much," he says.
Ahmed is a keen cultural ambassador (just take a look at Hanam's website), and is in constant attendance. He is easy to spot, sporting the traditional dress of the Kurds"
